DIY Crated Glass Bottle

I’ve been wanting to DIY crated glass bottle for months and when my cotton stems from Decor Steals arrived the other day, I knew it was the perfect time to get this project started! Fall decorating has been happening this week at our house and I’m enjoying the cooler weather. See how I made this DIY crated glass bottle –

I put them in a glass jug bottle I found on clearance last year at Target, but you can find a similar one. Lately, I’ve been obsessing over the vintage crated demijohn glass bottles like this one. I already had the bottle, and had the idea to build the crate out of scrap wood. The wood is left over from many of our projects but mostly from our barn door. I saved every scrap, I guess you could say I’m a wood hoarder.

I grabbed the bottle, a piece of 1×1, scrap fence boards, my jigsaw, a hammer, nails, and a level. I also ended up using Liquid Nails and I had all of these items already. I measured as I went and didn’t worry about anything being perfect. If its vintage – its not perfect. I started by determining how high I wanted my crate, and cut four equal pieces of 1×1.

Then I cut equal pieces of the fence board and began nailing them to the four “posts”. I did each side separately and then nailed it all together to create one large square. I was constantly checking to make sure my jug would fit inside. I decided not to create a bottom, but that can easily be added using this same concept. I had two slivers of wood left over and thought they would look perfect in the middle. For these I used Liquid Nails instead of nails for fear of splitting the wood.

All done! It only took me about thirty minutes to complete, including waiting for the glue to dry. I used Rustoleum’s Driftwood to stain the entire crate. It took about two coats to achieve the aged look I was going for and cover the red portions and the newer wood.

I love it! I will definitely be keeping it around even after Fall is over. This was an easy and quick project and the best part – it was free! It always feels good when you can use what you have.
